Description of duties
Appointing an external AI officer or person responsible for AI who oversees the use of AI in the company, assesses risks, and coordinates the internal processes around AI – this includes AI policies, training, approval processes, and the implementation of the regulatory requirements under the AI Act and GDPR. Alternatively, establishing an appropriate governance structure (person or committee responsible) according to the size of the company.
Why is that important?
The EU AI Act, unlike the GDPR with the Data Protection Officer, does not provide for a mandatory role of an „AI Officer“. However, according to Art. 4 of the AI Act, providers and operators are required to ensure sufficient AI literacy (AI literacy) among their employees. In practice, it is therefore advisable to appoint a responsible person or a committee that coordinates AI deployment, approval processes, and training: this brings together legal and technical expertise, relieves the management, and documents structured AI compliance with authorities and business partners.
