What does an AI Officer or AI lead do?
An AI officer or AI manager helps companies manage the deployment of AI systems, assess risks, and coordinate internal processes around AI. This includes, for example, policies, training, approval processes, and the implementation of regulatory requirements.
Do we need to appoint an „AI Officer“?
The EU AI Act, unlike the GDPR, provides for a
Data Protection Officer, not a mandatory function of an
„AI Officers“ are required. However, according to Article 4 of the AI Act, providers and operators must take measures to promote the AI literacy (AI Literacy) of their employees – this obligation applies already since February 2, 2025. In practice, appointing a responsible person or a committee that coordinates AI deployment, approval processes, and training is recommended. We help you build the appropriate governance structure for your company size.
When do the obligations of the EU AI Act come into effect?
The requirements apply in stages and the timeline has been shifted to summer 2026. The prohibitions under Article 5 are applicable since February 2, 2025, the rules for general-purpose AI models since August 2, 2025, and they are enforced since August 2, 2026. The transparency and labeling obligations under Article 50 apply since August 2, 2026. The main obligations for high-risk systems under Annex III have been extended by the Digital Omnibus Regulation (EU) 2026/1744 to apply from August 2, 2026. December 2, 2027 deferred, for Annex I systems on the August 2, 2028. However, postponement does not mean a warning of danger: an initial assessment and classification require time, and the obligations regarding AI literacy have long since been established.
